About Video

Carrying a handgun for self-defense also means being able to deploy that handgun in less than ideal scenarios. Even having to fight with it when an attacker is too close. In Fighting Handgun, Richard Nance walks you through the justification for close quarter combat skills, controlling distance, striking and fending, striking with your gun, the combat draw stroke, fowling the draw, primary and secondary target areas, shooting from retention, contact distance shooting, strike and shoot drills, and more. Richard has been a police officer for 21 years. A former SWAT Team Leader, Richard currently instructs shooting, defensive tactics, and several other tactical disciplines in addition to his current assignment as a Detective. Richard has an extensive martial arts background and holds the rank of Nidan (2nd-degree black belt) in Shudokan Karate. He is an Unarmed Combatives Instructor, certified by Kelly McCann. Richard contributes regularly to Guns & Ammo magazine and is the Self-Defense Editor for Handguns magazine. He authored the book, gunFIGHT! – An integrated approach to shooting and fighting in close quarters. If you are serious about carrying a handgun for self-defense or are in law enforcement, this is a must watch video.

This film covers a rarely discussed topic of shooting at grappling distances, and does it well.

About the first half of the film handles empty hand combatives, as it should do: in close quarters you have to fend the attack first, before going for your gun. The same techniques are used througout the film in different circumstances, so you don´t have to learn new techniques for every situation.

The most interesting subject in the film is using the firearm as a bludgeon; it is very hard to find any good material on this subject and it was one of the reasons I renewed my subscribtion to Panteao. I did not necessarily learn anything new, but the film validated what I had already known, and that is perhaps even more valuable thing than to learn yet another trick for your toolbox.

The contents of the film are top-notch, and the instructor also is very clear in his presentation, and convincing in what he teaches. Everything makes sense, although there are some nuances I don´t necessarily agree 100%. Overall, very good film on an interesting subject.

Absolute gold again from Mr. Nance. This guy knows his stuff, and the best part is he is always covering the gaps(on very serious subjects) that no one else is covering. You can find 15 different videos showing you the basics of carbine work, but almost nothing on fighting to keep that gun away from the other guy. And it is such an important topic to cover. I’m glad to have found this video.

This video – Make Ready with Richard Nance: Fighting Handgun is the only Training Video that I have seen that demonstrates the CQB Tactics and Techniques shown here by Mr. Nance. Topics of particular interest are Striking with the Gun, Shooting from a Retention Position, and Engaging multiple threats in a Close Quarters environment. I highly recommend getting this video and his other video – Firearm Retention Strategies.
